How UAE fuel prices are set
Until July 2015 fuel prices in the UAE were fixed and subsidised. Since August 2015 the UAE Fuel Price Committee sets them every month, based on the average global oil price of the previous month plus distribution and retail costs. The new prices are announced in the last days of the month and apply from the first.
In practice, UAE pump prices follow the oil price with a lag of about one month. When crude rises, the next month’s prices go up, and when it falls they come down.
How the UAE compares with the UK and the EU
| UK (28.09.2026) | EU average (21.09.2026) | UAE (October 2026) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol | 173.46p, about AED 8.44 | €2.092, about AED 8.72 | AED 4.28 |
| Diesel | 197.58p, about AED 9.61 | €2.226, about AED 9.28 | AED 4.80 |
UK figures from the government’s weekly road fuel prices, EU figures from the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin (weighted EU27 average, Euro super 95). Converted at the ECB rate of 29 September 2026: £1 = AED 4.86, €1 = AED 4.17. Even after this year’s increases, petrol and diesel in the UAE cost roughly half of UK and EU prices.
Fuel is one of the few everyday costs where the UAE is clearly cheaper. Rent, school fees and health insurance often cost more than at home. Our cost of living guide for Dubai puts all of it into one monthly budget.
What the increases mean for your business
For companies with vans, delivery vehicles or field staff, the 2026 increases are significant. A fleet of ten vehicles that fill up once a week now spends about AED 4,200 more per month on fuel than in October 2025. Three things to check:
- Update your budget. If your plan still uses prices from early 2026, it underestimates fuel by roughly 40 percent. You can check your overall running costs with our company setup and running cost guide.
- Record every receipt properly. Fuel receipts are business expenses and should be booked with the date, vehicle and purpose in your bookkeeping, so they hold up as deductible costs for corporate tax.
- Do not reclaim the VAT by default. Pump prices include 5 percent VAT. Whether you can recover it depends on whether the vehicle is available for private use. Since 1 October 2026 new rules also apply to employee costs and supplier checks, which we explain in input VAT recovery in the UAE. The VAT calculator shows the VAT inside any gross amount.
